Dear Librarians, Happy Thanksgiving! I've only just now gotten around to reading this week's LM NET postings and I was shocked to read that my favorite artist, Trina Schart Hyman, has died. If I may, I'd like to say a few words about how she affected me. I first fell in love with her when I read Astrid Lingren's RONIA, THE ROBBER'S DAUGHTER (a fantastic rip-roaring yarn). There Ronia was on the cover: definiant, dark and beautiful. She sucked me right into the adventure. Last week, as I gave a presentation to the PA on How To Choose A Book for Your Child and How to help Children Choose their Own Books (100 parents showed up!) - one of the things I talked about was when we choose picture books to read to kids, look for ones with art that YOU like. Go with your subjective tastes. And I showed them examples of my likes and dislikes - Trina Schart Hyman's work being my personal choice. Another favorite I recently read to our third graders was SENSE PASS KING - a beautiful folktale from Cameroon. It fit in with their study of continents and also the kids love stories that prove once again how much smarter children are than adults. But the paintings in that book .... I've had so much pleasure just pouring over them.
