Michelle, and everyone, there is a reading promotion program that is set up and
maintained by the National Association of Christian Schools. It is the Crown
program. You can find the books listed for every year at
www.childrenscrownaward.org. There is a selection of books for primary kids called
the Crown Gallery list; a selection of books for elementary kids called the Crown
Award list; and a selection for older kids called the Lamplighter list. Each year
there is a new list for each level. The lists are marvelous selections.
We use the lists just like we use the state books lists of Texas. We give
students little prizes for reading the books or their parents reading the books
from the list to them. We hang the top readers' pictures in the hallway (The Hall
of Fame), and we recognize them in newsletters, etc. You can do the voting stuff
too.
It wouldn't take much to make up a set of 5-10 questions for each book, and
then use those questions to check comprehension in a pleasant one-on-one system.
Ask the student who says she has finished a book ONE question from the list. If
she gets it, great; she's done! If she misses, ask one more question. If she
really read the book, she'll get it. If she misses, suggest she reread and talk to
you again later. Rotate the questions, so there is no telling which question any
student will get. The attention you'll give readers will really promote the list
and program.
