First, I want to say thank you to the many LM_Netters that sent me
information and words of support for sustained free reading.

Many of you recommended the studies by Stephen Krashen, and support by
Jim Trelease.

Krashen has a website with valuable information. I have subscribed to
his e-mail service:

http://www.sdkrashen.com/main.php3

Others recommended Reading for Change: Performance and Engagement
across
Countries: Results from PISA 2000, [on-line]. Available:
www.pisa.oecd.org/Docs/Download/reading_for_change.pdf

Further research, also led me to

"Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read"
prepared by the National Instutitue of Child Health & Human
Development/National Institutes of Health.

http://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/nrp/findings.htm

Regarding sustained silent reading (it's in the "Fluency" section), the
report states:

"...With regard to the efficacy of having students engage in
independent silent reading with minimal guidance or feedback, the Panel
was unable to find a positive relationship between programs and
instruction that encourage large amounts of independent reading and
improvements in reading achievement, including fluency..."

The report doesn't say it is a bad thing, only that there hasn't been
sufficient quality research to support it.

This report has been widely re-printed and has been used as the basis
by the current federal educational agencies to be the standard for
reading research.

Obviously, this is something my principal has read, so this battle is
lost, and I will not fight it.

I will continue to use the methods I know to create a lifelong readers
who enjoy the power of reading!

Thanks again!

Adam
