My school does not subscribe to online databases, so our magazines become a
more important part of our collection. I decided a few years ago that I
would keep Time, Newsweek, and US News indefinitely, as well as the Readers'
Guide so we would have access. My reasoning is this. When a topic is in
the news a lot, there is lots of coverage in these magazines. But, in five
or ten years, if a student needs to have lots of sources about said topic,
there may or may not still be much about it.

My decision to do this was proved valid a couple years ago when our history
teacher assigned the students to watch a historical movie, and report on its
accuracy by looking up source information about the topic. One student
watched "Blackhawk Down" about our time in Somolia. At the time this was in
all the newspapers and magazines, but didn't get much play afterwards. I
was able to provide all the information she needed by using the Readers'
Guide to access the magazines and all their articles.

I happen to have space to keep these magazines, at least for now. I will
probably need to decide if I really want to keep them forever, or get rid of
ones 20 years old or so in a few years, but I'm still going to keep what I
can.
