ORIGINAL POSTING: Hello: Is anyone familiar with THERE WAS AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A TROUT by Teri Sloat? It is the NW Pacific Native American version of I KNOW AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY. I am looking for a lesson plan for this story. Does anyone have a lesson they might share or any ideas? I checked "Linda's Link to Literature" (Richmond City Schools), but there is not one. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you ! Robert Joyce Library Media Specialist Pittsylvania County VA : Brosville Elementary robert@gcronline.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- Here is an unusual one...dealing with probability: http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=10701 or....What's to Eat? A Close Look at Food Around Our School: http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/ups/curriculum2003/food/foodres.html I also found a Conference Program from the late 1990's that included using the Native American story form of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Trout" in children's reading in Alaskan elementary schools.....unfortunately, no lesson plans, but it would have been a great resource to share with others (book form)...since obviously there is very little out there on the web through a "basic search." ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net I've used it by comparing to I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie. But you could use it by having the students discuss the regional characteristics of the setting, etc. and have the students create a version using characteristics from your region of the country. be sure you look at the author's comments on the book on this page http://www.henryholtchildrensbooks.com/authordetails.asp?ID=Sloat http://eduscapes.com/caldecott/98d.htm http://www.terisloat.com/meetteri.html http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/f/h/fhm106/elaborate.htm http://www.foxtalesint.com/schoolhouse/lessonplans/literacy_early.htm made a flannel board story out of it by xeroxing the pages, cutting out animals and coloring them in. I use it with the youngest kids and compare it to other stories: There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, Fly etc. There is another new one at the Scholastic book fair now about swallowing a snowball. use it along with "There was...Fly" and do a comparison study elementary style. Then you could have a class discussion about why the stories are different based on the cultures. And follow up with other folktales that are similar and different from different cultures. could you adapt the lesson plans for the "Swallowed a fly" version to fit the "Swallowed a trout?" Here are a couple -of links with kind of general ideas: http://www.marcias-lesson-links.com/YourIdeasforOldLady.html http://www.libsci.sc.edu/miller/Old_Lady.htm Use a puppet with a hole in the mouth. Have the little old lady eat the items in the story. could just use a picture of item.
