After a careful discussion with my administration last Friday of our "weaknesses" within the library program, I've been asked to create a document that offers some quantatitive justification for an increase in our library's staff. At this time we are a staff of 1.5 and we would like to be able to build this to a 3.5 staff. =20 Because we serve both the Middle School and High School divisions, it is nearly impossible to always be able to fulfill the needs of the teachers and students in instructional issues, as well as provide for the daily operation of the library, primarily because of the number of students AND the overlapping of the instructional periods (7 minutes overlapping can cause problems if you work with one division during one period and must be with another division immediately following that period.) We have been brainstorming ways in which we would be able to serve our students and faculty better IF ONLY we had the staff. =20 =20 We were thinking of breaking down the library's operational and instructional activities so that there would be a better understanding by those who were reviewing the proposal. In order to do this, we wanted to show the "Daily Operation" activities and the number of hours that we put in doing specific jobs (cataloging, shelving, input of student records, maintaining catalog, processing of materials, displays, decorations, special activities including author visits, bookfairs, etc.) and the "Instructional Activities" (which would include everything from collaboration to the book talks). We would also like to include the "Administrative Activities" that I normally do at home because of the lack of time during the day to get them done (ordering books, reviewing journals, answering emails, contacting vendors for reviews of materials, databases, etc., webpage creation, design and updates, contacting visiting authors, etc.) =20 Can you give us any specific ideas to include under each of these areas (so we don't forget them) OR offer us any other ideas to be sure to include? We aren't limited right now to the items that we can include, but we certainly want to let the reviewing source know that what we do each day impacts what our students will be able to learn (or not learn) because of the limited instructional time facing the library staff. =20 =20 (Yes, we will be including the Lance Reports and the new Scholastic Research Foundation Paper in our document.) =20 Thanks for helping! =20 ~Shonda Brisco MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX briscos@trinityvalleyschool.org =20 -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
