What I have done in my middle school, is as long as a student is testing at
grade level or above, I let 5th graders check out any books that are 500 up
to their lexile. 6th grade can check out 600's until their lexile, 7th
grade 700's through their lexile. 8th grade 800's through lexile. This
way, they get to read some books that may be below their actual lexile, but
not appropriate for them when they were younger. The teachers have agreed
they want them to be reading and especially in the fiction section, there
are not enough high level APPROPRIATE titles for this age group. It may not
be the best solution but it works for us. Students who test below their
"grade level" read books in their lexile range.

Subject: MID: High Lexile books

> Ugh, I so hate Lexile. But anyway, we have six graders reading at the
college level. They all have to read books in their level and take Reading
Counts tests on them. Problem is the subject matter of most of these books
in not age appropriate. I work in an ultra-conservative community. These
people get up in arms about the least little thing. So....any suggestions?
Dump RC? Wish I could.
