REF : book title

I have been asked to locate a book for which I was given little info. It
is about a man who wants to know everything and goes as far as reading
through the encyclopedia. Apparently the name "Jacob" is important.
Either Jacob (somebody) wrote the book or is the character who wants to
know everything. If anything clicks, I'll be grateful.
