I went to an inservice a month or so ago and one of the sessions was on such
a topic. They told us that some students take it because they think it will
be a "bludge", that they won't have to do much because they can choose what
they want to research and make it really easy. They soon find out that it
is not that type of class. Yes, they are allowed to choose a topic, but by
working with the teacher/librarian the topic can be quite involved. They are
kept to a tight schedule, which is placed on thier Intranet. They have to do
research with books, magazines, Internet, interview people, run surveys,
visit or work in certain areas etc. They finally have to present the
project at a morning luncheon in which many people are invited. Although it
can be quite daunting, I don't think any student at the school of the
presenters failed. The school makes sure that whatever topic the student
chooses, it seen by the school to be of value and so the students feel it is
of value and not just another assignment. If the final draft is of print
form, it is bound, catalogued and placed in the library. The presenters
said that some students have worked on changing school policy and have
succeeded. They run this elective in Year 10 and have found that students
that take it are much better prepared for VCE (Victoria's final 2 years of
secondary school)
I have spoken to our curriculum committee about running such an elective and
they are quite interested, possibly for 2006. (our school year finishes in
less than 2 months)
