This year because of my husband's transfer, I am in a new state at a new school.
In the past, I have had a teacher coffee before school when the new books come in,
with coffee cake or doughnuts. It always had so-so attendance.

This year, a big order of new books got delivered just before lunch a few weeks ago
and I was so happy to see them that I took a stack with me to the teachers' lunch
room. I ended up doing some impromptu book talks and reading, "Parker Picks" by
Deborah Levine to the teachers over lunch (K-5 teachers have strong stomachs).
They were so responsive, and argued over who got which book first to use in their
classroom that I continued teacher storytimes at lunch for a week (The Recess Queen
by Alexis O'Neill, etc.). I didn't want to wear out my welcome, sure that they
wanted to get back to the regular lunch time conversations about what happened on
"Lost!" and "Desparate Housewives", and who got stuck in Detroit traffic again
because Bush or Kerry was back in town campaigning. One of the teachers stopped in
to tell me she was happy the district was buying books again since she was sure it
had been years since we got any new books. I told her the budget had actually been
cut !
 this year
and she said NO ONE EVER TOLD THE TEACHERS ABOUT NEW LIBRARY BOOKS BEFORE!

Yesterday, I walked in to the lunchroom with a stack of books to deliver to a
classroom on my way back from lunch. It got very quiet when I walked in. Did I
have a strategic button undone? Was there toilet paper dragging from my shoe? I
was confused. Then I got a chorus of "Aren't you going to read to us today?" from
my teachers. "Do Whales Have Belly Buttons?" by Melvin Berger has never been read
with such enthusiasm....
