I ran across this problem last year (doing my Online Murder Mystery and =
discovering several "photos" of people under innocent terms like =
"red-headed male"---I needed an image of teenager with red hair for a =
possible suspect).
=20
We could not block all of the images primarily because the .jpgs were =
under "innocent" names / listings (like red-heads; or "teenagers"). The =
option was to teach students how to search for images through our online =
databases that offered images (like EBSCO) and to direct the teachers in =
how to use these databases also so that they would model what they (we) =
wanted them to do for assignments (including citing their photo =
sources--much easier for them in the databases because there are =
examples of how to do this).
=20
If others find ways to 'block" Google images that are inappropriate, I'd =
like to know also. However, I think because even our younger students =
realize how to use Google for images, it's a matter of teaching them =
other options while instructing them about the "wild web."

Subject: TARGET: Block google images?

Our Tech Dept Guru has asked for my assistance on resolving this issue.
If anyone has advice or a "how I solved it" story, please share it with
me and I will convey it to her.

thanks in advance.

My colleague writes:

"I am wondering if u can help/advise me a bit. A conundrum.. maybe u
have seen this discussed.

Using Google as an example, you can search "boys" or "girls" or
whatever and if u click on Images, it will give you the thumbnail of an
adult image even if it is on a blocked site.

You can set Preferences on Google to use Safe Searching which
significantly cuts down the number of images you will find, but does not
eliminate them. I have been hoping our kids haven't played with this
too much, but alas, some have been caught and they want me to fix it.

Well, that is hard. For one thing, I have been trying to research and
find out how I can set the preferences for the whole network, but I
don't think that is possible. Each computer would have to be set.
Ouch! Or I could block images all together, but if I do that, I am
cutting off visual learners from an entire resource because that will
block all images.

sigh... have you heard of librarians out there struggling too? Has
anyone thought of something clever? Do u agree blocking all images is
not a great idea?"
