For guidance, try the Diversity Style Guide
(http://newswatch.sfsu.edu/guide/2003_style_guide.pdf) from NewsWatch, a
project of the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism of
the San Francisco State University Journalism Department. It's a
resource I relied upon in my former career as a writer and editor. It
still comes in handy.

Good luck!

Subject: newbie seeks help---racism in printed works

Please excuse the cross posting, but I want to make
sure I am doing the right thing. I know that
terms/titles like "Great Negro Entertainers" are
unacceptable and should be weeded. However, are the
following terms considered racist as well?
     Chicano
     Mexican-American
     Latin-American, Latino

Isn't the proper term Hispanic?

I have many biographies printed in the 1940's--1970's
that I am concerned about. Is there any easier way
than reading most of these books to determine if they
are racist or sexist?

Where do I set limits? It seems to me that about 1/2
the library needs to be weeded due to age of the
collection, racism, etc. (The average age of the
entire collection is 1972.) I don't want to have bare
shelves but I don't want incorrect information either.
My professors at UNT are probably reading this, and I
know that "quality is more important than quantity"
but I am nervous because I am a 'newbie'

Thanks for the guidance,
Tricia
