Yolen, Jane._ Sword of the rightful King._ Harcourt, 2003
[0-15-202527-8]
Arthur is a new King and some of the people are unsure of
him so Merlinnus creates a stone with a sword which only
Arthur will be able to remove (of course because of magic.)
People come from all over to try their hand at removing the
sword to take the thrown from Arthur. A witch from the
north arrives and complicated the story. Also a mysterious
young boy arrives wanting to be a knight but ends up being
Merlinnus's assistant. This 347 page book is a wonderfully
crafted story by a master story-teller with a few twists
from the traditional Aruthurian legends. I especially liked
the portrayal of Merlinnus and his attitude toward magic.
The twist at the end is WONDERFUL.
