Thanks to the folks who responded to my target asking for picture books that
an eighth grade science teacher might use to introduce the concepts of
measurement. Here are your responses:

She might try Heinemann Library. They have excellent science books.

very good teacher...wanting to use trade books! Try going to Google and
sarch "picture books for older readers" you should find something

How Much is a Million -- there all kinds of neat ways the author
illustrates a million (ex. the distance if a million kids climbed onto
each others shoulders)
Picture window books has a science series with big bright colors that is
very cute.
How Big is a Foot? --the story of how size became measured (cute!) How
about:
Millions to measure / by David M. Schwartz ; pictures by Steven Kellogg.
Measures & space / by David Kirkby.
Various titles by Greg Tang including Grapes of Math; Math Appeal; Math for
All Seasons
One grain of rice : a mathematical folktale / by Demi

This book is not exactly about measurement, but it does an awesome job of
illustrating scientific observation and use of instruments to record and
analyze nature -- Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin.

I can only think of 3 books for length -- "Measuring Penny" by Leedy, "How
Big Is a Foot?" by Myller and "12 Snails to One Lizard" by Hightower.

Try picture books by Sheedy. Penny the dog learns all about math.
