We subscribe to Electric Library primarily because our science teacher wanted to keep it for her classes. This database provides a "topic" search method that provides groups of topics such as SCIENCE---->PHYSICAL SCIENCE----->CHEMISTRY------->(and then more specific topics such as "Acids and Bases"). When you "click" the term that interests you, there are articles dealing with specific topics from books, reference sources, magazines, newspapers, etc. This is just one example (there are other areas of chemistry in this database that are broken into searchable topics, such as Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Laboratory Methods of Analysis, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and even a Reference area for "just chemistry." Under each of these areas are subtopics that can be searched for articles. You might want to contact ProQuest to ask for a trial subscription for your teacher. If this is what she needs, I'm sure she'll love the features of the database--- it provides video clips, audio clips, full transcripts of news stories, TV and radio transcripts, tons of pictures, and my favorite, the ability to create a "book cart" of information for your students to refer to--- sort of like putting articles on "RESERVE" at the college level. But instead, the students can go to the ELibrary database and check "BOOKCART" and find what information their teacher has left for them to read from either the database holdings (actual articles that are placed there for them to access through hyperlinked terms) or preferred websites that the teacher wants the student to always be able to locate online (this is great for those teachers who DO NOT want to create a website but DO want students to have access to online sources that the teacher refers to often.) To sign up for a free trial of ELibrary go to: http://www.proquestk12.com/trialsignup.shtml Unfortunately, I can't say, "tell 'em, Shonda sent you!"....but after working for the last four weeks with my website in order to get ready to start teaching my teachers how to access, utilize and find the "bells and whistles" in our online databases, I feel like I could! Just some ideas.... ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lili, Library" <Library.Lili@ESTHERVILLE.K12.IA.US> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Friday, September 03, 2004 4:30 PM Subject: TARGET, SEC: Chemistry search terms > My high school chemistry teacher would like her students to research for > articles related to chemistry which they would then review and > summarize.
