"My subscription to School Library Journal needs to be renewed and I was
looking for some input---is there another journal/magazine that I should
subscribe to instead. Our system is K-12 with 5 buildings and we all use
SLJ. How about Booklist? Publisher's Weekly? Any other suggestions?"

Replies:

    1. I like KLIATT for book reviews. Booklist is good for upper levels and
adult.
Teacher Librarian may be useful.
    2. VOYA is wonderful
3 .I really like Booklist. The reviews are very helpful.
I'm also subscribing to Teacher Librarian this year. I
received a free copy at the AASL conference last year
and really liked the articles and suggestions.
    4. If you're a member of AASL, you'll get Knowledge Quest. I find that
that, LMC (pub. by Linworth) and Booklist are the best professional
development combination. SLJ's quality seems to be going down.
    5. I suggest BookLinks. I liked to leave my older copies in the staff
room, the
teachers actually looked through them. It suggests resources for specific
curriculum topics listing both new and not so new items. I found it very
useful when I needed instant resources because the teacher forgot to ask
for them last week. Book list is also useful.
    6. I like Booklist and VOYA
    7. Library Media Connection; Book Links is good for connecting teachers
and books.
    8. I subscribe to Horn Book, Booklist, Library Media Connection, and The
School
Librarian's Workshop. Titlewave (Follett) has reviews.
    9. I really like LMC (Library Media Connection) for the articles and
School Library Journal for the reviews. LMC is a little less expensive than
SLJ-- I'm fortunate to be able to afford both (for now anyway).
    10. I love SLJ. It includes political issues we need to know about. I
use it
in tandem with Booklist and love them both. If I had to choose between the
two, I would choose SLJ.
    11. If you are looking for book-buying guidance, pick Booklist; PW is
much more comprehensive but you will not be getting evaluations suitable for
library purchases--just blurbs.
    12. How about LMC (Library Media Connection)? Covers all grade levels
with good articles, reviews, and technology concerns. This used to be 3
publications: Book Report, Library Talk, and Technology Connection.
Booklist is OK, but it is really geared for the public librarian because
much of it is adult reviews. I receive SLJ, LMC, Booklist, Multi-Media
Schools, Technology & Learning, and Knowledge Quest
    13. I like SLJ because of the articles. That is the only reason why I
buy it. It is the only magazine I use. We used to also get VOYA, Horn Book,
and one other. I cancelled them all because they were all reviewing the same
items. Honestly, I din't have the time to read them. So, I decided to stick
with the SLJ.
    14. I love SLJ, but this year I added a subscription to VOYA (Voices of
Youth Advocates). It seems to have a more youthful approach and they often
review different books. I like the writing, the reviews, and the different
perspective it gives me. Fortunately, I had the money to add VOYA to SLJ.
    15. Both SLJ and Booklist are wonderful and I find a need for both. They
are costly but well worth it and necessary to do our job well.
    16. The titles I consider invaluable as a high school librarian are:
Library media Connection, Booklist, School Library Journal. If I had to cut
1 of the above - it would be SLJ, as I prefer LMC. I also subscribe to
Booklist because I find it to be the best source of reviews for a high
school, since it reviews adult titles as well as YA and there is a need for
both in a high school library.
    17. I like LMC better.(Library Media Connection) from Linworth. I had
SLJ my first year here and it seemed like inspite of the title ,lots of
stuff was public library generated or focused. LMC used to be a separated
K-6 and 7-12 (called Booktalk) but they are combined now. There are lots of
reviews by LMC's and plenty of articles, many written by members of this
list ( Carol Simpson is the editor) I can always find at least one idea in a
issue and it just seems to deal with the things that we face day to day more
tham SLJ did ( may have changed since I saw it last.
    18. I get SLJ and Booklist along with School Librarian's workshop paid
for by my school. I almost never use the workshop, but read the other two
religiously. On my own, I subscribe to Horn Book Guide which I read cover to
cover the two times per year it comes. That comes in handy when I need to
fill in a curriculum hole. I do a subject search back a few years. I
recently re-subscribed to the Horn Book Magezine and received my first
issues of VOYA and Library Sparks. I have read Kliatt and the other high
school slanted one that used to be called Book Report- I think it's School
Media Connection now. They are pretty good. If you need to choose one, SJL
really does it all. I leave half of Booklist unread as I only read about two
adult books a year now.
    19. I get booklist and now I'm going to get Publisher's Weekly because
w/ the subscription you can get access
to their website which is updated daily--fantastic, very current resource!!
    20. I like Booklist and Library Media Connection. I used to get SLJ, but
was put off when I noticed most of their reviews were done by Public Library
librarians not school librarians and I think it does make a difference...
