In a message dated 9/18/2004 9:11:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time, nghogsett@HOTMAIL.COM writes: So many students are surprised to find the folk/fairy tales and poetry in the "non-fiction." How do you explain that to the inquiring, sharp thinkers? Instead of calling it the "non-fiction" section, I call it the "numbered books" section. I tell the kids that Mr.Dewey has a number for EVERYTHING, including picture books and chapter books, but that libraries had so many of them that librarians made separate sections for them. I also make sure they understand that others will call the "numbered books" section the "non-fiction" section, but that it is misleading. They understand that quite well, I think, and can always come up with a fiction book that is in the numbered section. I explain that all non-fiction books are in the numbered section, but not all of the numbered books are non-fiction.
