Personally I think that is a brilliant assignment and shows perfect use of how the Internet can provide such up-to-date information. And maybe your kids will have discovered the name Ian Thorpe (perhaps even Pieter van den Hoogenband or Grant Hackett) during their research and investigated their achievements. They were the swimmers that Phelps was trying to beat. Are their names mentioned or their pictures published in your print resources or would they have been another spin-off of using the Net? Most of the women's world swimming records are held by Australians so you would need their names for the comparisons - are they also in the print resources you have? Possibly you have print resources that track the world records of each event so students can see how these have become faster over the years and you could have introduced these, but for the up-to-the-minute results you need the Net. Even Newsweek wasn't fast enough if there was a week's delay in printing - some records were broken two and three times. My point is that there are times when the Internet IS the best source of information - our role is to help students know what is the best type of resource to meet their information needs AT THE TIME and how to use that resource efficiently and effectively. And for a bit of cheek - I would also have asked why are Australians so dominant in swimming!
