Another note to the Kirkus Review... The Christian Science Monitor's book editor, Ron Charles, reported recently on a new program from Kirkus Reviews, which will let publishers buy placement in new publications.=20 Self-published authors can get a review for $350....??? ...this now brings into play the challenge of locating resources with reputable reviews that are not driven by their advertisers (publishers) but rather that are driven by the needs of their readers (librarians making professional collection decisions). ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX briscos@trinityvalleyschool.org =20 -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Sharron McElmeel Sent: Thursday, September 30, 2004 11:15 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: Gossip Girl Challenge NOW online Book reviews You might be aware that Amazon no longer has Kirkus Reviews on their site (at least the recent reviews). Quoting entire book reviews online is a copyright violation UNLESS one has made arrangements to do so. Thus, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. pay the reviewing sources to republish their reviews on line. Evidently Amazon thought the cost was too much to continue their contract with Kirkus so reviews from that source is no longer included in the offerings from Amazon although Barnes and Noble continues to include them on their site. Neither site has ever (to my knowledge) included reviews from sources such as Library Media Specialist (old Library Talk/Book Report) or other valuable but not so major resources. Most of the reviewing sources have access to their reviews online -- usually for a subscription fee; the advantage to online is that the reviews are searchable electronically.
