Years ago, when the swim suit issue came I quietly got rid of the issue. A few days later the principal walks in to the library the swimsuit issue in her hand. She informs me that she doesn't want this magazine in the library. I told her that the library's copy was no longer in the building and the one she has belongs to the assistant principal. She wasn't a happy camper. I've found through the years the less said about something the less the students will want to investigate. Case in point my mother told me I wasn't allowed to read 1984. I found the book within a week, and read it during study halls. In my home town the film "The Exorcist" was at the local theater. During the first week schedule the manager told my Dad that he would be lucky if he broke even on the showing. A local minister started telling everyone that no one should see the show, it was horrible, why were they showing it in our town? The paper started to print the stories about the minister and his concerns. The film was held over for weeks. If the minister and the newspaper would just have kept their views to themselves, the film would have come and gone. I did not think anything of putting it out since it was an anniversary issue. I do not put out the swimsuit issue. One of my students pointed out the Cheryl Tiegs picture and the sand "bathing suit" picture. I don't feel those are appropriate for our kids at school. I am in a junior/senior high school grades 7-12. I just don't think they need to be seeing those things here at school. Just my opinion. I don't want to be a censor (especially this week!), but it is in my office right now.
