I want to add that another payoff to asking a subject specialist to help is
that they then find treasures in your library. I heard "Oh, you have this!
How great. I will check this out for my classes." It was great PR for a
group that sometimes does not use you to the fullest.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Weeding

I like to depend on my faculty, or in some case, knowledgeable parents to
help with weeding. The first year I was in a small library with a very old
collection. I know that a lot of the science books were desperately
outdated, but feared I would throw out "classic works." The husband of one
of my volunteers, a practicing scientist, came in and helped me see what to
look for (pictures that reflect current safety equipment, for example). He
also suggested I not toss the Asimov books. Now, of course, we would also be
alert to stereotypes fostered in content and illustrations, but people
active in the field might pick up on it faster. That has been reiterated in
other schools. My foreign language faculty got to go over a lot of old dime
store paperback novels that had been on the shelves for ages. In most cases
if you choose a very specific section that might only take 1/2 hour or so
the faculty are glad to help, and might be surprised to see some of the
things you do have. I think they also appreciate your recognition of their
expertise. And I always feel more comfortable with another head working
with me while weeding.
