I currently require students to have a pass before they come to the library. Students may come during their lunch period or from a class if they have a pass. I am trying to monitor the situation but I am encountering some roadblocks and would like to know how you handle student access. Some of my problems: 1. Students want to use the library at lunch time but their subject area teacher does not want to write them a pass and wants me to write one for them. 2. Teachers write passes for periods other than their own class, so the student might have a pass from a science teacher to be in the library during their math class. 3. Gym teachers write passes to allow students to come to the library to do homework instead of taking gym. 4. Students are cutting classes to come to the library to play games on the computers. We also just found out that our filters are not working properly and students are getting to all kinds of sites. That is being corrected immediately. My middle school has 1600 students and I am the only one in the library. It is difficult to be in all places at once. I do have a supportive principal and he wants me to write a new policy this weekend. He even wants to restrict teachers from sending a student during their class time for research saying they have computers in their rooms. I'm not sure I want to be that restrictive, because I feel that if it is a legitimate project the library resources should be available. What kind of policy do you have? How many students do you allow at lunchtime?
