I do have very mixed feelings about this "event." For those of you who might
have missed the info, the State Educational Technology Directors Association
has cooked up this Technology Blackout Day in an attempt to gain lobbying
power within Congress to get more funding for technology. More funds for
schools, including funds for technology appears to be a laudable goal -- I'd
rather more funds for technology in schools than more funds to update atomic
bombs.

On the other hand, when I first saw the notice, I was wondering why they
picked a date so close to TV Turn-off Week. A day without technology seems
to me to be a rather relaxing thought. I think I'll try it -- and look
forward to doing so. ;-)

You might get a kick out of looking at some of the lesson plans. In the
upper grades one of the objectives is to learn to distinguish between Fact
and Opinion. As in "It is a fact that we need more technology in our
schools, not an opinion." Interestingly, in these lesson plans, there is not
one mention of the possible downside of so much reliance on technology.
Balanced these lessons are not. The whole event is a lobbying effort, with a
thin veneer of an educational purpose.
