When I took over my current position I did a check of collection usage. Of the 12,000 items in the collection almost 8,000 had not been checked out in at least 5 years so I have been doing some serious weeding. This first time though I am not weeding anything no mater how old that has been checked out in the last 5 years. I have come to the 973s and am in a quandary. We have an extensive collection of materials that are very old. The lion's share are circa. 1960-1980. I am also finding a great many materials that are pre 1950. They are primarily scholarly reference type materials that would not circulate a great deal. (March of Democracy by Adams 7 vol, 1933, etc.) How relevant are such materials. My first instinct is to pitch them but they were obviously well written and scholarly. They are not primary source materials, their condition is only fair and I am not finding anything that is considered very valuable monetarily. I would appreciate comments on their usefulness.
