Please excuse the cross-posting. We held our first Poetry Jam last Friday after school. We had over 100 people attend with about 16 music and poetry acts performing. We also set up a student art gallery with drawings, paintings, photography, and even some shop projects. I got a lot of help from our Leadership Class so it went very smoothly and we got many complements. The audience was great. We had no discipline issues and the kids left the library nearly spotless. Our new principal was very impressed. I want to thank everyone who shared their experiences with this type of event on LM_NET and CalibK12. Special thanks to Linda Elliott, Library Media Teacher at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, CA. Her workshop at the California School Library Association conference in November had lots of great suggestions and motivated me to get to work on something I had wanted to do for 3 or 4 years. If you are thinking of trying something like this I highly recommended it. It was a lot of work but it got many teachers from several disciplines involved as well as lots of students. It was a great way to end a week of standardized testing and a great way to display a lot of hidden student talent. I have a slide show from the event on our library's home page.
