Good morning!
I catalog them using the Dewey number (398.2*) and the first three letter of the
title. Since the stories are retold, it makes more sense for my students to find
all the versions of Stone Soup shelved together by title than to seek out all the
retellers' names and then start searching. I also find that it is just so much
simpler for them to look for the book: if they want Cinderella, they look
alphabetically under "C."

My school is k-8 so when I am doing an alphabetizing lesson with the younger ones
and extending that skill to how it is important to know alphabetizing in the
library, having some of their favorite stories in the non-fiction section helps to
segue into the Dewey lessons. Our school also participates in regional
storytelling contests, so this further spirals onto the folktale\fairytale genre
lessons. The answers I get when asking why fairytales and folktales are in the
non-fiction section are priceless. I find that having the folk/fairytales in the
non-fiction section makes the little ones feel grownup and just facilitates the
older ones' access. When they were shelved in the picture book section, the middles
wanted no part of them, and the little ones passed them up on the way to Clifford.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Cataloging Fairy/Folktales

Dear Rita,

I catalog Fairy/Folktales as picture books, unless it is an anthology or collection
of fairy/folktales. In that case I catalog them under Fairy/Folktales. I do this
because students are much more apt to check out the picture books then they are to
check out the same books shelved in the non-fiction section.
