Hi Folks--

Wow. I just checked my e-mail, and there I was, listed in the company with
all those wonderful, august folks, several of them old pals of mine, even. After
reading myself silly all this year, compiling a list of 100 fabulous new 2005
children's books to tout for this year's round of speeches and workshops, I
so value the recognition of my peers. Quite the mood lifter, I have to tell
you, and it made my whole week. Made me crave a nice latte, decaf, and an
oatmeal raisin cookie, too. As the professional fingersmith said in Roald Dahl's
great short story, "The Hitchhiker" (from The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, if
you need an oldie but goodie read-aloud to wake up a class, grades 5-8),
"Thanks, guv'nor. It's nice to be appreciated."

Here's my other fabulous news and pick-me-up for the week—I've JUST finished
writing my final annotation--number 1,991, if you like palindromic
numbers--for my forthcoming book, Books Kids Will Sit Still For 3 (and you can even
see
the new cover if you look it up on the Libraries Unlimited website,
www.lu.com). I've been working on my albatross of a book (850 pages?) nonstop for 2
years
now, locked up in the attic like Mr. Rochester's first wife, like a pregnant
elephant, and I never thought I would get it done. My brain is fried. My
editor is awaiting my manuscript this week, so I'm proofing like Barney Google
(with the goo-goo-googly eyes), but I'm almost there! Hooray! It will be
bee-yoo-tee-ful, (as they say in Philadelphia, my hometown).
