While having my very intellectual conversations with my current
clientele (4 teenage sons and their friends) while they were kicking
the soccer ball against the house, I decided to try out my reader's
advisory techniques to loosen up for school. Fortunately I work in an
elementary school because here are their high school and middle
school requests paraphrased and I have until they come home to think
of some answers:
*I need a book where stuff happens and quick. It should have lots of
fighting and mayhem, maybe even some revolutions. Lots of battles and
not a lot of that explaining on and on stuff. You know, epic stuff.
*I only want to read the books that are worth your time. You feel
like the guy is important to you so you bother to turn the page and
make sure he's still okay. And when you finish, you go "Wow! Huh!"
*I want a book like my video game where the zombies are coming and
you have to work with somebody but you don't know if they are going
to go down the right street in time to help you out of not. And if
they don't, the zombies do disgusting stuff like pull out your eyeballs.
*I only want those short stories where something happens. No
descriptions. Just action. Give me some plot and I'll think about why
it all happened.
*I want a book to tell me why that girl said she wanted to be my
friend and now she's all too good for me and my friends.
*Give me a book that has all these essays I need for AP English class
'cause I have to finish them, but I need 6 different kinds of essays
and the political ones online where all boring.

If anyone has suggestions for this diverse group, I'd appreciate it.
I'm taking the list with me to the local library, but they don't
exactly choose to read many of those type of books for fun. Now, I
could go to Davis-Kidd bookstore or to the Barnes and Noble in Cool
Springs where they actually encourage their employees to read and
they have guys who specialize in these genres <grin>. I am looking
for titles that I can stash in my car so the boys have choices
available in styles they like.
Once again, elementary students are soooo much easier to answer.
Thank you to all those high school librarians.
