Hello, Everyone: I recently posted a question on the Net, relating to how I can set up the barcodes for AV equipment and materials. And here are the responses: I've just been introduced to Destiny, but as a long time user of Follett's "regular" system, I wasn't impressed. For years we have had videos in our system (Cat+ has a template for *anything) you want to catalog) and recently added all our AV equipment onto our system. We have a separate set of barcodes (from Follett) for people and books/equipment, but make no further distinctions. If it checks thing out, it's a person (barcode begins with P for patron); if it gets checked out, it's a thing (barcodes begins with T). I have heard thru LM-NET and other places that you don't need to change barcodes with Destiny if they were acceptable to Follett before. We let call numbers and call number prefixes make the distinction about types of things to check out. It seems to work well, and makes things easy to distinguish for collection analysis, inventory, and any other kind of review. Hope you're not making unnecessary work for yourself! __________________________________________________________________________________ We use 100xxx for elementary library; 200xxx for elementary resource center 300xxx for jr/sr hi library 400xxx for jr/sr hi resources 500xxx for professional library materials and 600xxx for classroom sets of books, and CD-ROM I use four numbers for Adults, ILL, etc. and 3 for students. why can't the equipment be by location? search under some other parameter when you want to print out a list of all computers for example???? __________________________________________________________________________________ Any item that is on the school fixed assets list has as its barcode the fixed assets number. That makes it very easy to know who has the item during the annual inventory hunt. For instructional materials that are purchased with library funds I add PRO to the Dewey number if it is a book. For periodicals I add PER. For all audiovisuals, the first line is AV the second line is the medium type then the rest is the usually call number. And in case you are wondering, I've decided to go with the method described in the second response, 100XXX for elementary and so on. Many thanks to all who responded and have a great day.
