My write-up:
So far there are two graphic novels for younger readers about the endearing
daydreamer, Babymouse, written and illustrated by the talented team of Jennifer
L. Holm, author of Newbery Honor novel, Our Only May Amelia, and her brother,
Matthew, a graphic designer. Drawn with heavy black lines and hand-drawn
panels, highlighted in passionate pink, the illustrations are refreshingly
original; the sprightly title character survives the horrors at school through her
vivid fantasies. I adored them both, but the second one, Babymouse: Our Hero,
where Babymouse must go up against her nemesis, the cat Felicia Furrypaws, in
the one aspect of school that is her undoing—dodgeball, made me laugh even
harder than the first, Babymouse, Queen of the World, where she gets herself
invited to a sleepover at Felicia's house.
GERM: You can't really read these aloud; they're read-alones that readers
will pore over and laugh, but certainly, your cartoonists can write and
illustrate further adventures of Babymouse or dream up their own characters.
