One of my 6th grade Language Arts' teachers does monthly or bimonthly units on different book genres. The next one is the narrow category of non-fiction. Usually for other genres, she has them read the entire book and do some kind of assignment on it or a report. She wants to break out of that mold and do something different with non-fiction books. I pulled a bunch of non-fiction books for her classes to choose from so they didn't go after things like Guinness Book - I chose books that were single topic not a whole bunch of unrelated topics. She wants something more than read this and do a report and she wants to steer students away from picking just the smallest/thinnest books to be done reading quickly (unless they have low reading levels then we can give smaller books to those students). However, she doesn't want to set a page minimum because while some books may only be 80 pages, they are chock full of information. I never taught LA so I have no clue what to suggest. Can anyone send me ideas of what they have seen their teachers do with non-fiction books and how to avoid the size trap? I am off to search for book report alternatives to see if I can find something there. Thanks! Hilary L. Grant Media Specialist Highland Middle School 305 N.
