Emporia State University - Jones Institute, Visser Hall.
Mike Printz Writers Workshop
"Kansas Students Achieve Because of Great School Librarians."

Program:
Christopher Paul Curtis
Christopher Paul Curtis has felt a burning desire to write ever since he
couldn't talk his way out of problems. Born in Flint, Michigan, Curtis
spent his first 13 years after high school on the assembly line of Flint's
historic fisher body plant #1. His job entailed hanging doors, and it left
him with an aversion to getting into and out of large automobiles -
particularly big Buicks. Read more

Lemuel Sheppard
Lemuel Sheppard is a folk musician/storyteller with rare abilities. His
first performances were under Dr. Eva Jessey, internationally acclaimed
choral director for George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", who came to
Pittsburg State University as Kansas Ambassador to the Arts, and Artist in
Residence, in 1978. Lemuel was saxophonist and guitar accompanist with the
"Eva Jessey Choir", who performed at the Kansas Folklife Festival that
year, and was subsequently invited to return the following year for his
first solo engagement, at age 21. His preparation for this engagement has
led Lemuel toward pursuing a lifelong interest in researching
African-American music.

Evester Roper
She is an internationally acclaimed storyteller and has been delighting
children and adults with her stories since 1989. Her audiences are treated
to fables and folklore from around the world, told in her high-energy
performance style. Her goal is to promote ethnic awareness through
literature, telling stories with foundations in various cultures, including
African, Native American, and Russian. Her stories incorporate
colloquialisms that are part of the cultures' speech and traditions with
themes that emphasize the difference between right and wrong and good and
evil.
