Thank you to everyone that sent new ideas for bear catagories.

Students bring in a teddy bear or stuffed animal. we opened it to
include other animals since students said they didn't have a bear.
They can bring as many as they want. When they bring them to
the library they fill out an entry slip with their name and homeroom.
The entries are tied with yarn around the bears neck or other suitable
place. Tape sometimes came loose. it is helpful to include the
homeroom so it makes it easier to sort the bears when they go home.
The bears are here for a week and at the end of the week we
have a bear beauty contest (aka scholarship pageant). Some of the
possible catagories are:
what they do at night- best dancer, joke teller, singer
cutest
cuddliest
most loved (good for worn bears)
furriest
best dressed
largest
smallest
most unusual
shyest
bravest
friendlist
most unusual neck ribbon
pointy ears
cutest expression
softest
oldest
bear with best story
best fashion statement

I don't tell the students ahead of time what the catagories are.

The k-1 students read bear books and we keep track of them.
Grade 5 uses the data to create charts using excell

Grade 3 had a bookmark contest
Grade 4 wrote bear biographies

A beary special biography about ____
First memory
Favorite place
Best friend
Best character trait
Favorite memory
Only bad habit
Interesting fact
Favorite activity

I also have a bear activity book that they assemble and keep.
Also bear trivia for all levels.

The students have a great time looking at all the bears. Even the 6th
grade boys that are reluctant at first bring in bears.

For prizes I use assorted stuff that I have collected. One of the gifts
that students all liked was .97 cent flashlight that I got at Wal-Mart. It worked
for all grades and boys and girls. Another gift was a mug with cocoa.
It really is a lot of fun and the students look forward to it every year.
