As a parent of a child attending Scofield Magnet Middle School I have always
noticed that projects and reports are almost exclusively based entirely on internet
sources. I have done my Mom/Librarian thing and tried to show and encourage my son
to use (not particularly successful with that!) a variety of resources (print
encyclopedias - not Wikipedia - reference books, databases, etc.) but the fact is
that it has never seemed to be a school requirement to utilize print media.

Also, Annea, when I originally saw the Library, about 2-1/2 years ago, I was awed
by the spacious, bright and modern facility. When I commented on the empty stacks,
I was told that the school was new and that they built the Library with plenty of
room to grow the collection, At the time I was also aware that the BOE had almost
completely cut school library book budgets. Is there currently an adequate budget
in place?

I am also troubled by the principal?s remark about books not being a necessary
educational ingredient ("Did you tell them that we don't need books since we are a
technology school?") if she ever mentions that to me I will definitely have a
strong, well-rehearsed and researched response to inform her of their value!

However, the one thing that the Principal is right on the mark with is her comment
that the Media Center has become an exciting a place! I have noticed the positive
change during my visits to the school. Let me know if I can be of any help and
good luck!

Help! I am an experienced teacher of 32 years who has just changed school
districts and taken a job as an LMS. I love it. The problem is my principal
who thinks that since we are a magnet technology school, we don't need books.
(In my interview I was told the former person didn't want to purchase anything
and that was the reason the library had scant resources) When some parents
came into the library the commented on the nearly empty shelves; when I
reported this to the principal, her response was, "Did you tell them that we
don't
need books since we are a technology school?" She and the assistant
principal's have commented over and over about how exciting a place the media
center
has become, so she is not unhappy--how do I get her to realize the import of
BOOKS?
