As a reviewer for children's and YA books for AudioFile for over a decade, this is a topic close to my heart, err, ears! I am a passionate proponent of a strong audiobook collection in every school library and I do believe that listening is reading (though I acknowledge that it is not print decoding :>). I taught with a very talented language arts teacher who went on to become the literacy coach/data specialist for the school. Although she was a strong supporter of audiobook listening, she did NOT believe that listening was reading, and thus we had a friendly ongoing disagreement that grew into a full Language Arts unit of study called "Is Listening Reading?" While we undertook the unit with fifth graders, it's certainly adaptable through high school. It included listening to an audiobook and reading the print version of the same book, learning to write audio reviews and producing a polished final audiobook review, interviewing others on their opinions of the essential question, and participating in a student round table discussion of the question. It was an amazing unit and is published in Collaborating to Meet Standards: Teacher/Librarian Partnerships for K-6 (Linworth).
