Anne McCaffrey has written a series ( one of several) on the Dragonriders of
Pern - a weyr was the homestead ( base) of a group of dragonriders and their
dragons. Great stories.

Some titles:
Dragonriders of Pern: First Fall
Dragondrums
Dragonflight
Dragonquest

and many more.
