I'm a bit flummoxed by what they seem to think is correct and important
citation information. This is what they say is needed for a magazine
article in a subscription database accessed from home:

"Who is the Best Stooge?" Comedy Unlimited. All Comedy. ProJest. 1 Apr.
2004.

Here is what Warlick's Citation Machine
<http://citationmachine.net/index.php> says:
Jest, Beau. "Who is the Best Stooge?." Comedy Unlimited (nd) All Comedy.
ProJest. Cucamunga Slapstick University Library. 19 Dec 2005
<www.AC.ProJest.info>.

Oregon School Library Information Services (OSLIS
<http://www.oslis.k12.or.us/citeintro/nof_citesession.php?Grd=Sec>):
Jest, Beau. "Who is the Best Stooge?." Comedy
Unlimited 15 March 2003: 1,4-5. All Comedy. ProJest. 1 April
2004 <AC.ProJest.info>.

NoodleBib (express) <http://www.noodletools.com/login.php>:

Jest, Beau. "Who is the Best Stooge?" comedy unlimited 1.13 (March. 2003): 1,4-5.
ProJest. Cucamunga Slapstick University. 19 Dec. 2005.

And, if I'm following MLA (6th) correctly:

Jest, Beau. "Who is the Best Stooge?." Comedy Unlimited
March 2003: 1,4-5. All Comedy. ProJest. Cucamunga Slapstick University
Library, Cucamunga CA.1 April 2004 <AC.ProJest.info>.

EasyBib lists author as optional in magazine, other info is 'optional'
in journal and magazine. Both list where subscription accessed as not
needed if done from home.

NoodleBib has a couple of neat features: It doublechecks whether what
you are citing is a magazine or journal; a good point when discussing
resource evaluation and to insure getting cite right. Some of the
variations above are due to me not differenciating or service not
providing both. It also copy pastes with indent, which the others don't.
(some formatting, like underline/italic, lost copy/pasting to plaintext
email)

There are varying degrees of how much / long the various services save
your previous work. In any case, it would be prudent to build a
preliminary bib as you work, and some teachers want to see the bib early
in process anyway.

While there may be some specific advantages to subscribing ($$)to a
service, I'd weigh carefully what the free ones offer, especially when
looking at completeness, accuracy, and general ease of use. As well as
establishing the viability of the resource free or not.

FYI, I have Warlick's Citation Maker and OSLIS Citation Machine linked
to from our Library Home Page <http://pac.egreen.wednet.edu/library/> .
Our students find them both easy to use; teachers like the accuracy
and completeness. Both prefer Citation Maker. The few that have used
easybib have wound up redoing their bibs; I think they figured optional
wasn't important.

I also provide worksheets that students use to fill out source info. CL
tteachers are using them to teach to in classrooms also. Good reinforcement.

It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question. -Eugene Ionesco
