My district purchases public performance rights to most films through some company so I don't have to worry about breaking copyright laws. However, in a departmentalized setting, it gets pretty crazy if everyone is showing movies. I think our teachers realize that and many of them come up with other fun things to do to tie into their curriculum. One team uses the class novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and on the last day of school before Christmas, they have various culuminating activities in all of their classes. One of the favorites is to make candy of course. Another team had students creating their own gift bags in one class, making no-bake cookies in another, and creating cards in the third classroom in their team. Alas, there was even one team of teachers that gave semester exams the last day to 6th graders. They only had their Christmas Party in the last 40 minutes of the day. So, yes, there were probably a few classes showing movies but I kept the library open and my classes the last day were about copyright vs. public domain. I read The Night Before Christmas by Moore and then an adaptation by James Rice called Texas Night Before Christmas.
