I teach classes up to the last minute every day. For the holidays, this past
week I've done a lot of craft/participation extensions of language arts
lessons.

Kindergarten and First graders enjoyed listening to Snowy Day and Snow and
looking at the Caldecott winning illustrations. We then made pop-up cards
with snowmen and an evergreen tree they could decorate.

Second graders had the same stories, but we made glue/glitter snowflakes
that they took home and stuck on their windows (and showered their mothers'
carpets with glitter!)

Third grade, (who must study biography), listened to Snowflake Bentley,
discussed what a biography is, how to find them, etc.; then cut out
snowflakes, folding holiday paper to make some really beautiful ones.

For Fourth grade, I talked a little about O. Henry, read a children's
version of The Gift of the Magi, then we made paper boxes for them to use as
tiny gift boxes.

But my favorite was Fifth grade. We have a pretty good sized Hispanic
population, so we read Too Many Tamales, then made tamales. Actually they
just mixed masa and water and put it in corn husks then folded. But I made a
huge batch of tamales so each kid who wanted got to sample a real one.

I saw over 700 kids that week. Each grade level each day. It was killer, and
I could not have done it without an extraordinary aide. But we did it, the
kids were learning and having a blast. And I think they will come back in
January, ready to get back to work for me.

We teach by example, both to children and our fellow teachers.
