Hello,

Our 8th grade Language Arts teachers would like to drop the less
challenging books from their required list (the first three on the list
below) and add two or three more challenging titles. I would appreciate any
suggestions. They are looking for classics, but cannot teach To kill a
mocking bird or Lord of the Flies because those titles are taught in the
9th grade.

(To avoid duplications with what we presently cover, I have included the
nine optional choices for 8th grade students and the four required books
for our 8th graders in Social Studies.)

8th GRADE NOVELS REQUIRED:
Heaven
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
The Pearl
Flowers for Algernon

8th GRADE INDEPENDENT READING/LITERATURE CIRCLES:
I Am the Cheese
Stargirl
Monster
Hope Was Here
Bless Me, Ultima
The Chocolate War
The Call of the Wild
Shizuko's Daughter
Speak

8th GRADE TITLES TAUGHT IN SOCIAL STUDIES
Animal Farm
My Brother Sam Is Dead
Warriors Don't Cry
Fast Food Nation

Thank you.

Best regards,
