Several years ago we went with a student agenda book - this year we found a
Catholic edition. Woe to the teacher who tries to use individual passes or
pieces of paper.. No student moves in the school without this book and it is
a 5 dollar replacement fee if lost. This agenda book solved many problems..
I also use the book of ID a student who has forgotten his ID card (with
barcode).

I agree with Jean -- I have the student write out most of the info (date,
library, period) - I sign it. We also have a guideline that it would be
better to have everything signed by noon. I know it must sound as if we are
very rigid around here and we are and it sure makes everything very easy.
This does not imply that we are a "prison" - the school prides itself on its
family atmosphere --- we just make sure everyone in the family knows what we
expect.

My only change really is DO NOT make the teachers do more work. Our
students fill out the pass, the teacher then just has to glance over it
and sign if it is filled out correctly and legibly.

I made my own passes. They are about 3 1/2 inches square. I can fit 6 on
a
page. I make several copies, specifically on pink paper, so that I know
they
are my passes when a student comes into the media center. Teachers must
fill
out the student or students' name(s), date, teacher name, time, and
specific
reason that the student needs the media center. I hand pages of passes
out
to the teachers who know that I have resorted to this method in order to
curb, not only misuse of the library, but skipping as well. If a student
arrives without a pink pass, I send them back to class. If they are not
working on the work designated in the pass, the get sent back to class.
Works for me.

When I started in this library last Fall, I was handed a LARGE box of
Library Passes from the printer (complete with the old librarian's name
on
them). After having used these since then, I'm convinced that there must
be
a better way! Do any of you have printed passes that work well for you?
I'd
like to know exactly what the teachers expect the kids to be doing in
the
Media Center when they send them, but the form I've been using is too
complex for any teacher to fill out. So, generally, they just put the
student's name on it and sometimes sign it--if I'm lucky.

Any suggestions?

I checked in the archives and saw that some schools use time clocks to
track
the students' time in the media center. Have any of you had experience
with
this? And if so, do you also use a paper pass from the teachers to give
you
a clue of what their intent is in sending this student to you?
