Linda,

I did a Google search on "history of coloring books" and found a link
to a Library Stumpers response to a query. The response said, "A short
history of coloring books is included in Maurice Rickards _Encyclopedia
of Ephemera_ (Routledge, 2000) on page 102." (Joe Pava, South Windsor
Public Library, South Windsor, CT)

Our reference department has the book so I found this information for
you:

"Children's drawing and painting books originated in Germany in the
early years of the 19th century. They emerged as one of the by-products
of Alois Senefelder's invention of lithography ( c. 1798), at first
appearing as uncoloured images for copying, later showing twin images,
one coloured by the manufacturer, the other for the child to colour."
It specifically mentions one title, "Der Kleine Zeichner und Mahler"
("The little drawer and painter), published in 1811. The original
source of Rickards' information was Heiner Vogel, Bilderbogen
Papiersoldat, Wurfelspiel und Lebensrad (Wurzburg: Popp, 1981).

Another source suggested on Stumpers was the book "Collectible Coloring
Books" by Dian Zillner and Suzanne Silverthorn. We also own this book,
but the author only discusses coloring books that were published in
England or the US from the mid-1880s on.

Hope this helps!

The Vigo County Public Library is "easy to find. It's the million-story
building at Seventh and Poplar streets." (Lori Henson in her
"Briefcases" column, Terre Haute Tribune-Star, 10/8/02)

I have been searching for when coloring books were invented. Can
anybody
help me? I found about crayons, but not have been able to find out
anything
about coloring books. Thanks in advance.
