We've had a cart of laptops in the library for 2.5 years now. These are the
policies and procedures that work for us.

1. I keep the cart behind the circulation desk and have all the laptops
barcoded. When a student comes in to use a laptop, he has to have a current
student ID (which is also our library card) and no overdues in order to check
out a laptop. Laptops must stay in the library. (It's amazing the importance
students place on using a laptop. I get more overdues back with this policy
than with any other!) BTW, I do have 7 desktops that students who cannot check
out a laptop are able to use, so I'm not restricting anyone's access to a
computer.

2. I have a label on each laptop that states that they are to be used for
school purposes only -- no personal email, chatrooms or games. This is very
difficult to monitor, but we do what we can. If I catch someone playing a game
or in a chatroom, I ask them to turn in their laptops and find something else
to do.

3. The printers are in my office. While I don't check everything that prints, I
get a lot less waste than I the few days they were not in my office.

HTH,
Cyndi
