> Hi: > > For what it's worth, here's a new study (just announced today) from > Boston College on the effects of computer use on student performance on > a standardized test. > > http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2005-01/bc-rcu012805.php > > Bob Hirshon > Senior Project Director > Kinetic City/Science NetLinks/Science Update > American Association for the Advancement of Science Folks should read this > article. Note the following passages in this article: " the study found that the more regularly students use computers to write papers for school, the better they performed on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems (MCAS) English/Language Arts exam. This positive effect occurred despite the fact that students were not allowed to use computers for the test. Conversely, the study found that students' recreational use of computers to play games, explore the Internet for fun, or chat with friends at home had a negative effect on students' MCAS reading scores." This relates to the NETP. The NetDay findings were that students are primarily using the Internet to play games and communicate with friends -- activities that are found to reduce performance. But the NETP applauds youth for being ahead of teachers. Nancy -- Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D.
