Ouch! I have received a few flames so I want to clarify my position.
May I remind some of you that a lexile is just a number? It is only
a tool, a guide. Textbook companies use lexiles so that they can
write books that students can understand - written at their level. I
allow kids to check uot ANY books that they want, lexiled or not and
also to check out lexiled books in their range. Lower elem teachers
say it is working so I do not want to mess with success. If second
grader wants to haul Harry Potter home, he/she can do so. It is
not a straight jacket approach, but rather an aid with rules that
allow students to check out anything. Yes, I do love books, and I do
read, and I do other things than lexiles. Thanks for letting me
clarify. Have a great weekend, everyone, as it will be here in a
few hours. Happy Reading!
