Hi Sue,

We were also having a problem with excessive printing, mostly kids printing
entire websites instead of selecting and printing. Also, they were
impatient, so they would hit print 10 times before they realized they were
printing to the wrong printer, etc. We contacted Ted Wisniewski at Plymouth
State because he has authored print quota software that restricts users to a
specified number of pages. He is willing to share it for free,
unfortunately it didn't work with our system. His contact info is:
Ted Wisniewski E-Mail: ted@mail.plymouth.edu |
| Manager, Systems Group WEB: http://oz.plymouth.edu/~ted/ |
| Information Technology Services |
| Plymouth State University Phone: (603) 535-2661 |
| Plymouth NH, 03264 Fax: (603) 535-2263

We are doing a 30 day free trial on some software now that seems to be
working well-it's www.papercut.biz. The kids are only allowed to print 10
pages a day (you can set that however you like) then it resets the next day.
Perhaps they would consider donating the software to your school in exchange
for some good press since you are poorly funded. Their contact info is
sales@papercut.biz. I know there are other programs out there also.

Good luck.

Subject: TECH: Printing Policies

I am having major problems!! First of all, I've about decided I'm
running a computer lab, not a media center.
The cartridges & paper do not come out of my budget, and we are a Title
I school (very low socioeconomic) so I have not been charging for
printing. However, I am going through about a case of paper a WEEK and
a toner cartridge every 6 WEEKS. In spite of trying to police the
printing (I try to keep an eye out for lyric printing, cheat codes,
etc.), it is out of hand, though I admit that while I was doing the
technology inventory my supervision level was way down. I bet I threw
away a reem of paper yesterday that was "junk". I used to keep it as
scratch paper, but there is too much of it.

I am ready to disable the printers altogether and only allow printing
of finished work. Maybe have students copy their work (internet
articles & info) to disks and have them do all their work from the
computer. In fact, out of frustration I just told about 6 kids I am not
allowing any Internet printing, only finished work printing, and they
all left!

I brought this issue to my media/technology committee last fall, but no
one had any ideas, and I was too new to this school to have a feel for
where to go with this.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
