elementary school libraries.  Thanks to all who responded.

World Book Student Discovery Encyclopedia (for primary)
World Book Encyclopedia (for elementary & intermediate -- no other
encyclopedia comes near it)
World Almanac and Book of Facts in paperback (update yearly)
Golden Book Encyclopedia on CD
Lands and Peoples
Heineman/sp?/ First Encyclopedia

Dictionaries::

Thorndike-Barnhardt Dictionary (Children's ed. for primary, Junior ed.
for intermediate)
Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary (for secondary)
Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, Third Edition (for all libraries)
 American Heritage Dictionary (not as comprehensive as above, but
generously illustrated)
Foreign language dictionaries and phrase books (depending on local
needs)
Scholastic Dictionary for Children
Webster's Collegiate Dictionary
Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms
Webster's New Biographical Dictionary

Thesauri:

Scholastic Student Thesaurus by John Bollard (for elementary)
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus (for secondary)
Roget's Thesurus

Quotations:

Scholastic Treasury of Quotations for Children by A. Betz (for elem)
Bartlett's Quotations (for secondary)
Quotations for Kids

Atlases:

Rand McNally Road Atlas (covers US, Canada & Mexico) (update frequently)
A world atlas (check out: Hammond, Goode's, National Geographic, or
whatever is the latest; update frequently; buy a paperback world atlas
every two years, a hardcover atlas every five years)
Hammond World Atlas
Hammond Atlas of the United States

Nature:

Wildlife and Plants of the World by Marshall Cavendish, 17 vol. set
(for elementary)
Field Guides: Sibley or Robbins for birds, other guides put out by
Peterson, Golden, DK, Audubon, others, for pets, wild animals, wild
flowers, trees, geology, rocks & minerals, fossils, stars, etc.
Grolier's Endangered Animals
Grolier  s Amazing Animals of the World
Wildlife and Plants of the World (Marshall Cavendish)
The Raintree Science Encyclopedia has good concise articles for use by kids.
Set of Zoo Books


American History:

Morris. Encyclopedia of American History. Harper '96  one volume (Grade
5 up) Packed with details of people and events. (Ideally, every teacher
of American history should have this book on his or her desk.)
