Hi All, This is why you should have a clearly defined, comprehensive and publicly available Selection Criteria that is part of your Collection Development Policy that is signed off each year buy your Principal/School Board. This is where you advertise your expertise and the methodology you employ to develop the collection within the constraints of your particular school context. The following link from CMIS Evaluation has some great information and templates you can use for the selection of multiple formats. http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/cmis/eval/library/selection/index.htm :) BC @ Your Library Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Information Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." I have received the barrage of emails I knew I would receive about selection vs. censorship.. The point I wanted to make - was made by many individuals -- who furiously emailed me about the fact that they select - not censor -- or that they can buy what they want and their principal doesn't question them. The point is -- he or she could -- the media specialist is not the "final" authority -- The second point --- I said to look at the issue from another point of view --- The majority of people who are not librarians --- do not see the difference between "selection" and personal censorship -when you order materials -- We fly off the handle defending selection of materials and many people that are not librarians don't see the difference --\ Not one Aha! -- we need to do a better job of definining materials selection by a professinally trained librarian . My colleagues -- if we don't -- we need to do some serious consideration of why certified professional librarians are needeed- Think about these things: 1. A company can now run a rpeort on what I have in a media center and tell me what I need to buy for a school library 2. An assistant can check books out 3. A parent volunteer can read a story 4. An assistant can watch kids while the teacher takes a break -- (fixed schedule) 5. I have the Internet -- we can get rid of the library -- Are these my views -- no -- but since I am involved in many things in a small district -- everything from furniture purchase, construction, libraries, technology, adminstrative reporting, testing, etc, etc. These views continually surface at district, state, and national level meetings - conferences, etc. If we don't become proactive and show our worth -- as budgets become more constrained -- NCLB requirements increase - AYP is the ideal -- we wont' be needed Now forget quoting the Colorado study, etc. --- you can pass that out till you are blue in the face -- Each of us must become more proactive in our roles as media specialists Libraria have been my passion since I was a small child --- we must survive -- it may be a battle but it is worth figthing for -- Paula Paula Yohe Director Of Technology/Library Media Center Dillon School District Two 405 West Washington Street Dillon, SC 29536 Phone: 843-841-3604 Fax:843-774-1214 paula_yohe@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
