When the library server is down - very infrequently - I open a WORD
document. If a whole class is checking out, I type the teacher's name at
the top. We use student library cards for whole class checkout, so I scan a
student card, then scan the barcode of their books. WORD will read those
scans and translate them into numerals. Then I double space and do the
next student.

If individual students come in during the down time, I just type their name
into the document, and then scan the book barcodes. It's pretty easy when
the server is back up to hand-enter the information.

Less chance of an error in the 13 digit barcode if it is scanned instead of
handwritten!

I have a clipboard full of checkout sheets that I made using Excel for those
times when the system is misbehaving. Student name, book title (in case one
of my helpers inverts barcode numbers or has illegible handwriting!) and
barcode, then I check them out by entering the barcode manually when the
system is back up.

Robin and Colleagues,
I am replying to "all" because this may be of interest to a number of
'netters. I do not put cards and pockets in books now that we are
automated. If the computers go down (twice in eight years - fingers
crossed) I simply put the bar code number of the books a student is checking
out next to the student's name, and the students take the books. When
computers are up, I put in the number, the student, and scan "check out."
This doesn't take all that much time, and students and teachers are happy.
The first time the computer balked, I had students leave the books with the
student's name an a slip of paper in the book. Yikes! I then had all these
books to deliver. I learned <g>
