Last weeks issue of U.S. News and World Report had a 3 page article on the impact of reading and literacy on academic achievement; mentioning subject teacher's new roles in this area. Never, in the whole article, were librarians mentioned. I think letters to the editor might be worthwhile, however, where is our influence, the recognition that good librarians raise test scores? June 15 - 16, 2005 the Kansas Institute for School Librarians will be held at Emporia State University, Jones Institute in Visser Hall. Jody Howard, author of Acton Research: a Guide For Library Media Specialists is the key note speaker, after which we will have a panel of Kansas legislators, state librarian and a state board of education member react to Jody's message. The second day is the Mike Printz writers workshop with Chris Crutcher as presenter. More information about program and registration will be available soon. 2 hours of graduate credit with be available through ESU - School of Library and Information Management.
