Last weeks issue of U.S. News and World Report had a 3 page article on the
impact of reading and literacy on academic achievement; mentioning subject
teacher's new roles in this area. Never, in the whole article, were
librarians mentioned. I think letters to the editor might be worthwhile,
however, where is our influence, the recognition that good librarians raise
test scores?

June 15 - 16, 2005 the Kansas Institute for School Librarians will be held
at Emporia State University, Jones Institute in Visser Hall. Jody Howard,
author of Acton Research: a Guide For Library Media Specialists is the key
note speaker, after which we will have a panel of Kansas legislators, state
librarian and a state board of education member react to Jody's message.

The second day is the Mike Printz writers workshop with Chris Crutcher as
presenter. More information about program and registration will be
available soon. 2 hours of graduate credit with be available through ESU -
School of Library and Information Management.
